Xavier Robles de Medina
Xavier Robles de Medina’s (b. , Paramaribo) sensibilities are rooted in an observational drawing practice as well as an objective dissection of the painting as a three-dimensional object. He questions social and artistic categorizations, in search for a truth regarding his identity as it relates to the painting tradition.
In Robles de Medina was the youngest nominee for the Prix de Rome Visual Arts (Netherlands) and also completed Residency Programs at WOW Amsterdam and CTG: Zimbabwe. In his drawing “En het donker duurde een volle nacht” earned him a place on the short-list of the Royal Award for Modern Painting (Netherlands.) Last year Robles de Medina enjoyed his first NYC solo with Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, his first solo exhibition in Suriname at Readytex Art Gallery, and embarked on the MFA Fine Art program at Goldsmiths, University of London. His first European solo was on view in May at Barbé Urbain Gallery, Ghent.

(for English readers: In May I gave a speech in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, close to the Belgian city of Gent, about the work of Gert&Uwe Tobias on the occasion of their exhibition. I started with an in memoriam of Jan Hoet&#; who donated his private library of art books to the museum. As yet I did not translate my introduction into English but you can find the text of the Tobias-part, which I wrote originally in English for Elephant Magazine, below the Dutch text)
Tijdens een Nocturne in museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in het Belgische Deurle bij Gent, gaf ik op 15 mei jl een uiteenzetting over het werk van de Duitse kunstenaarstweeling Gert& Uwe Tobias. Hiervoor vertaalde ik in het Nederlands een artikel dat ik schreef voor het zomernummer van Elephant Magazine. Aangezien het museum een bijzondere band had en heeft met de onlangs overleden Jan Hoet leek het mij wel zo gepast om Jan eer te betonen door iets over hem te zeggen.
Dames en Heren,
Ik beschouw het als een eer dat Joost de Clerq mij heeft uitgenodigd om hier ter gelegenheid van de Gert&Uwe Tobias- tentoonstelling een praatje te houden. Niet alleen omdat dit museum over een bijzondere collectie beschikt, maar ook vanwege het feit dat zij de ruim boeken tellende privé-bibliotheek van Jan Hoet gaat huisvesten.
